Currently, NCDs are the leading causes of death and disease burden worldwide. The four main types of NCDs, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, and diabetes, result in more than 30 million deaths annually. To reduce the burden of NCDs on global health, current Public Health actions stress the importance of preventing, detecting, and correcting modifiable risk factors; controlling major modifiable risk factors has been shown to effectively reduce NCD mortality.

The diseases often spread from one other via air, food, water or transfusing instruments or blood transfusion or bodily fluids. Communicable also mean infectious and contagious. Many of the epidemic diseases that the world experiences today are because of contamination. Limiting contamination and proper hygienic habits can halt the spread of disease. The focus areas involved in combating communicable diseases include public health information, science and research, prevention and control, case management, and regulating diagnostic tests and vaccines. Early diagnosis, proper medication and maintaining good hygienic habits are crucial for communicable diseases.

Healthcare Spending

Health spending measures the final consumption of health care goods and services (i.e. current health expenditure) including personal health care (curative care, rehabilitative care, long-term care, ancillary services and medical goods) and collective services (prevention and public health services as well as health administration), but excluding spending on investments.

Health spending accounted for 9.2% of GDP in Italy in 2012, very close to the average of 9.3% in OECD countries.

The public sector is the main source of health funding in nearly all OECD countries. In Italy, 77% of health spending was funded by public sources in 2012, slightly more than the average of 72% in OECD countries.

As in many other European countries, health spending in Italy has fallen in recent years, as part of government efforts to reduce budgetary deficits following the economic crisis. Preliminary estimates suggest that these reductions in health spending have continued at a rate of -3% in real terms in 2013.

Pharmaceutical Spending

Pharmaceutical spending covers expenditure on prescription medicines and self-medication often referred to as over-the-counter products. It is measured as a share of total health spending, in USD per capita (using economy-wide PPPs) and as a share of GDP. Italy spends 17% of Healthcare spending as Pharmaceutical spending lagging world average by 2%.

Life expectancy at birth

Life expectancy at birth is defined as how long, on average, a new-born can expect to live, if current death rates do not change. However, the actual age-specific death rate of any particular birth cohort cannot be known in advance. It is presented as a total and per gender and is measured in years. Because of its good healthcare system, the life expectancy at birth in Italy was 82.8 years in 2012, which is over two years above the OECD average.

Hospitals

Depending on the region, public funds are allocated by local health units to public and accredited private hospitals. In 2011 there were approximately 194,000 beds in public hospitals and 47,500 in private accredited hospitals. Public hospitals either are managed directly by the local health units or operate as semi-independent public enterprises. A diagnosis-related group-based prospective payment system operates across the country and accounts for most hospital revenue but is generally not applied to hospitals run directly by local health units, where global budgets are common. Rates include all hospital costs, including those of physicians.

 Alcohol Consumption and Obesity

Alcohol consumption, on average, has dropped more than in any other OECD country in the past 20 years, and obesity rates among adults are below the OECD average (although national statistics are based on self-reports, which likely underestimate true rates). However, rates of overweight and obesity in children are among the highest worldwide. Heavy episodic consumption of alcohol is on the increase, and tobacco consumption is high, in young people. All of these will likely lead to greater demand for healthcare in the future.

In 2013 there were 4.2 Doctors per 1000 inhabitants, 6.1 Nurses per 1000 inhabitants and 11.1 Medical Graduates per 100,000 inhabitants in Italy.

Overall performance

In 2000 WHO positioned the Italian medicinal services framework high because of high achievement scores in every one of the measurements considered, in particular strength of the populace, value of account and affectability to patients' desires (WHO, 2000). These accomplishments were accomplished with use levels that were essentially lower than in numerous other well-off nations. The most recent 15 years have not been simple for Italy as the economy has been stagnant, open obligation has risen and political organizations have indicated auxiliary inadequacies. In any case, regardless of this somewhat unfavourable general situation, the SSN is still all inclusive, financed by general tax collection, with restricted co-instalments and gives free access to essential consideration, particular consideration and an assortment of other general wellbeing and preventive administrations. Changes have been intermittent, and in spite of the extremely troublesome times for the nation, the SSN seems, by all accounts, to be fairly sound and is adequately esteemed by natives, despite the fact that more wariness has been showed since the begin of the monetary, money related and financial emergency. No radical or real changes are on the motivation.
